Homefires Hearth Thursday 11.19.09

19.., 1998.... Wow, I was born a long time ago!

Yikes! While I like most of the things that growing older

brings (my grandchild is #1 on "likes" of getting older)
I don't like the zooming speed the of days, months and

years .. Sometimes they are passing in a blur!

Reminds me of what Jesus says in the bible:

I Am Coming Quickly

He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.”
Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! Revelation 22:20 (NKJV)

Matthew 24:42-44 (NKJV)

Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.

But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour

the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his

house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son

of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

That's the good news of the speeding days we are in. Are you ready?

Today's Challenge

Kitchen
Clean entire outside surface of cabinets
Wipe with lemon oil or furniture polish

blue. He sweats profusely and gets huge stiff stains in the arm

pits of his shirts. I think they are from his deodorant. The rest

of the shirt is fine, so I don't want to relegate them to the rag bin

if I don't have to. Has anyone found a way to get the stiff white

stain out of the shirts? I wash his shirts separately and I have

tried (not at the same time!) vinegar, Odo-ban, non-chlorine

bleach, and Coke along with an extra dose of detergent.

Thanks for a solution!

**Editors note... for those who aren't knowledgeable of

"internet language, dh is dear husband; dd is dear daughter,

ds is dear son... I thought about changing it, but thought

it would be more fun to explain it.

This is a recipe that my mother always took to the holiday

get-togethers and to any other occasion where she was

asked to bring a dish. People always wanted this recipe.

She first got the recipe when she cooked for the Manor

at the Hobe Sound Bible School in Hobe Sound, FL.

Norma in FL

Mom Greggs Cranberry Salad

1 Large pkg Raspberry Jello Sugar free)
1 can whole cranberry sauce
1 can Mandarin oranges
1 cup chopped Walnuts
1 diced apple
dash cloves
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

Desolve Jello with 2 cups hot water.
Add remaining ing. stirring well.

Put in fridge to set.
ENJOY!!!

"But now I come to You, and these things I speak
in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in
themselves. I have given them Your word; and the
world has hated them because they are not of the
world, just as I am not of the world" John 17:13-14

The role of the teacher is unique. It could be compared to a
pitcher whose contents are poured into glasses. The pitcher
empties itself of all it has so that the glasses can be full of
what the pitcher contained. Of course, like all analogies, this
one falls a bit short because, unlike the pitcher, the teacher
never empties, but is constantly refilled as he pours himself
out.

Jesus was a teacher supreme. He poured Himself into His
disciples. He taught them for three years. He led them to
the Father. He directed their paths in ways of righteousness.
He prepared them for His departure. He told them what the
future held. Jesus filled them with God's Word. The only
problem is that the world didn't like the interference it was
getting from these God-filled men. The world never does,
because this interference draws power away from worldly
things and gives it back to the Father from whom it was
stolen.

Indeed, the world hated them because they were different.
We are often like that. We see people a bit different from
us and we dislike them. It may involve the color of their skin,
or the way they walk or talk, or the way they dress, or the
land they come from. It makes no difference. They are
different; therefore they are not to be trusted. It is easy
to see that in today's world.

You and I are hated. People who don't even know us hate us.
People who have been brainwashed by rogue governments and
misguided "spiritual" leaders choose to dislike us because we
are believers in Jesus Christ. That is just the way it is. And, it
will not get any better. We are hated because our God has
blessed us because of the obedience of our forefathers. We
are hated because we have abundance while they have poverty.
But mostly we are hated because we follow in the footsteps of
Jesus of Nazareth, the one who broke the power of satan. The
day will come when we will not only be hated, but we will be
hunted down and killed because of our faith in the Master.

Does this mean that we should be looking for a way out of this
world? Quite the contrary, we are to be seeking ways to turn
our world upside down for Jesus. This is our mission. This is
our calling. This is what we were created for. This is why we
were called out of our sinful state - to win souls for Jesus. And,
ironically, this is why we will be hated all the more.

Go out and pour yourself into someone else. Let them be filled
with you - because you are filled with Jesus. In doing this, you
will both be refreshed and strengthened beyond measure. Amen
and Amen

I really appreciate getting emails that tell me you, the readers,
enjoy Homefires Hearth. Often, I put the finishing touches
on HH after I've had a long, tiring day, and I can barely focus.
Tonight is one of those tired nights.

But God is faithful. He gives me energy to finish, and it's His
Hand that pulls it all together.

So, if Homefires Hearth Blesses you... Don't blame it on me.
It's because the Holy Spirit keeps me going. Sometimes,
when I go back and look the next day or so, I think, I don't
remember doing that, it's pretty good.

It's that time to start sending in favorite recipes you would like
to share, as well has tips and ideas to help other HH readers
go through the holidays. Our hearts are Thankful, and Jesus
is the reason for the season!

Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

INGREDIENTS:
6 medium sweet potatoes or yams
2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup grated walnuts

HOW TO PREPARE:
Cook & mash sweet potatoes / yams. Mix in butter, lemon juice, salt
& 1/4 cup of the brown sugar. Put in a casserole. Sprinkle the
remaining brown sugar & nuts on top. Bake @ 375F for 20-25 minutes
uncovered.

"But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash
your face, so that you do not appear to men to be
fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place;
and your Father who sees in secret will reward you
openly" Matt 6:17-18

It's all about attitudes. Why do you do what you do? In today's
verse, Jesus refers to fasting. The previous verse talks about the
person who lets the whole world know he is fasting by the apparel
he wears and the appearance he presents. Jesus says that is the
wrong attitude. "When you fast, anoint your head" -- comb your
hair and look totally normal -- "and wash your face so that you
may not be seen fasting by men, but by your Father. . . ." There
it is. The attitude is to be one that is visible only to the Father.

While the verse refers to fasting, the principle applies to everything
we do. Tithing? Do it privately -- don't make a big deal of it. Helping?
Do it quietly -- just go about your business and let it rest. Preaching?
Do it humbly. Sewing? Do it to the best of your ability and pass on
the blessings. Cooking? Working? All the same. Do it to the glory
of God.

I used to watch professional football games most every Sunday.
While I enjoyed the games, I did become disturbed about a trend
that has overtaken modern athletes. When someone made a great
catch, the receiver did a little dance. When a touchdown was scored,
the dances became quite elaborate. When a good open field tackle
was executed, the defensive man jumped to his feet and pranced
around like a peacock. This is exactly what Jesus is talking about.
These men have received their reward -- along with a few million
dollars in pay. What happened to the professional who does his
job, returns to the huddle and goes about his business?

Unfortunately, many Christians act the same way as these football
players. We sing a great solo and we are proud. We do a good deed
and we tell all our friends about it. We win someone to Christ and
we paste it all over the Internet. We live a victorious life and we write
a book telling the world how we did it. It's time that we, as believers,
go about doing what the Father has asked us to do and let the
recognition come from Him. Remember, our rewards should be
laid up in Heaven to be enjoyed for all eternity, not on earth to
be relished for a few brief moments. Hallelujah, Amen.

Cracker Barrel's Ham And Egg Casserole

1/3 Cup diced cooked lean smoked ham (cured ham if available)
1 Slice sour dough bread, remove crust, and
cut to fit bottom of casserole dish
4 eggs - (to 5), beaten
1/4 Cup evaporated milk
1/4 Teaspoon salt
1/4 Teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 Cup shredded mild Cheddar cheese

Spray casserole dish with a non-stick spray and place
sour dough bread on the bottom of casserole dish.

Beat eggs, add salt, pepper, evaporated milk and mix
completely. Pour egg mixture over bread. Sprinkle diced
ham over egg mixture and cover.

Place casserole in refrigerator overnight or in refrigerator
for at least five hours.

Remove casserole from the refrigerator, spoon shredded
Cheddar cheese onto the top of eggs. Smooth the cheese
gently on top of egg mixture.

Place casserole in a preheated 375 degree oven for 20 to
22 minutes depending on the depth of the casserole dish.

This recipe yields 6 servings.

It is a natural law -- and it cannot be over ruled. What you sow is what
you get. Sow beans, you get beans. Sow corn, you get corn. Sow thistle,
you get thistle. Sow trouble, you get trouble. It's as simple as that. Paul
carries that a little further by talking about spirituality. Sow to the flesh
you get corruption. Sow to the Spirit of God and you will reap eternal life.
Any farmer or gardener knows that when you sow a seed, you have to
wait a while for the desired plant to mature. It makes no difference whether
it be a flower or a fruit or a seed. Between sowing and reaping there is a
time span. In some cases is may be a couple of weeks. Most of the time
it is two or three months. On occasion it is years (consider the acorn
and the oak!) The prudent man knows this and is prepared for the wait.

Paul says we need that same patience and foresight. Sometimes we
will harvest quickly from seed that we sow. But the really good harvest
will be reaped after our deaths. "In due time we shall reap -- if we do
not grow weary." What are you sowing? Harvested lately? Be patient,
the mature crop is on the way! Meanwhile, keep sowing, cultivating,
watering, hoeing, fertilizing -- and praying! God rewards those who
patiently wait! Amen

Homefires Hearth Tuesday 11.3.09

The last few days, I keep thinking, it CAN'T be November. How

did that happen?

So the holidays are upon us. Most of us have tightened our belts,

some because of jobs lost or threatened, some because the

slow economy has gotten our attention.

Living on less is always a good idea, and if you end up with excess,

you can always help someone else, donate to a food bank or soup

kitchen, or quietly help a family in need.

So I'm hoping that we can come up with some creative, awesome

ideas that will give us some holiday memories despite the belt-

tightening. The Lilley Pad tries to keep everything simple, since

I have fibromyalgia and have to budget my energy as much as

our finances! Life is good, we have so many blessings, that keeping

things simple never seems to curtail any of the love and laughter.

So dear readers, let's hear from you!

Fruit Pizza

Fruit Pizza
Ingredients:
Crust:

1¼ cup all-purpose flour

⅓ cup brown sugar

3 tbsp icing sugar

⅔ cup softened butter
Topping:

12 oz. of cream cheese, softened

½ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp vanilla

Variety of fruit

Optional: apricot jam or orange
marmalade

Optional: whip cream
Directions:
Crust:
1.  Mix all four ingredients together
1.  well.
2.  Form dough into a ball then press

     into the pizza pan.
3.  Bake at 350ºC for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
4.  Let cool.
Topping:
5.  Beat cheese, sugar and vanilla together.
6.  Spread mixture over cooled crust.
7.  Arrange fruit over top of mixture.
8.  Glaze fruit if you like (see below)
9.  Garnish with whip cream is you like.
Apricot Glaze:
10. Mix ¼ cup jam or marmelade with 1 tbsp water and rub through sieve. Brush over fruit.

There, it happened. James and John were campaigning to
be Jesus' special agents. They wanted it all -- they didn't
want to share a thing. And they used their mother to try to
edge into that special spot! How bold! How brazen! How
disgusting! Is it any wonder that the remaining ten were
disturbed, for lack of a better word?

If Jesus were just some other religious leader, this could
have spelled the end of Christianity. Things like this have
been known to split families, divide partnerships, and
destroy nations. But Jesus, being God, knew how to
deal or un-light the fuse and restore relationships -- and
you and I have a relationship with Him because of His
ability to mend fences in human associations.

Of course you and I would never allow such things to
happen in our lives. We rejoice when our best friend is
promoted to the position we had set our eyes upon. We
help plan the wedding of the person who stole the love
of our lives right from under our noses. Jealousy never
crosses our mind!

Sure, and I had some land in south Florida that is perfect
for development -- if you like want to commute to work in
an airboat! So what do we do when relationships turn sour?
How do we handle other people's success when we are
standing still? The answer can be summarized in one word --
"focus."

Focus on Jesus Christ and all these things will be done for
us. Focus on God the Father and He will direct our paths.
Focus upon serving the King of kings and we will be able to
rejoice as He uses others to accomplish His works. Focus
upon the Prince of Peace and we will find the peace that
passes understanding. Focus! Hallelujah, Amen and Amen

The past week has been a challenge, and I know some prayers
have been going up for us. Colds, flu, a training trip to Seattle, and
a couple of tough dental visits were some of the things that challenge
us. The training trip to Seattle has overflowed into 6 weeks of at home,
online training and assessment tests.

All this to say, thank you for the prayers. I don't know how we would

Help! Our home has been invaded by gnats! We had a few tomatoes
from the garden that got a little too ripe before we could eat them, and
a plum was left forgotten in a lunch bag for several weeks, but I'm
pretty sure I've gotten rid of all possible culprits, and still the gnats
remain. I've been cleaning out kitchen drawers and cupboards
looking of possible sources, but to no avail. Usually if something
goes bad enough for gnats, you can smell the decay.

I have a jar of Dawn & vinegar sitting out since last night, but this
morning there were even more of them.

Other than setting off a fogger, which I really don't want to do, I'm
at a loss. Tonight is garbage night, and all the household cans will
be getting a good scrubbing & spraying with Lysol tonight. I hope
that helps.

Any suggestions?

Cranberry Rice Pudding

Dried cranberries and a hint of maple syrup add festive flair to this
hearty and warming holiday favorite.

2 cups water
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1 cup raw long-grain white rice (I use brown)
3 cups enriched vanilla soymilk
1 12.3-oz. pkg. lite silken tofu
2 cups evaporated cane juice
2 Tbs. pure maple syrup
2 Tbs. cornstarch
1 Tbs. pure vanilla extract
1 cup dried cranberries
2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350F.

Bring water and salt to a boil in saucepan. Add rice, stir and bring
to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover pan and cook 20 minutes, or
until water is absorbed (If you use brown rice, it will take longer...
maybe 40 or 45?) Add soymilk, and cook mixture over low heat 5
minutes, stirring frequently.

Place tofu in food processor, and blend until smooth. Add cane
juice, maple syrup, cornstarch and vanilla, and process until smooth.
Fold tofu mixture into rice, add cranberries and mix thoroughly. Pour
into 3-quart baking dish, and sprinkle generously with cinnamon.

Bake uncovered 30 minutes. Remove from heat, and serve warm,
or cover, refrigerate and serve chilled.

The problem is, that is exactly what Jesus demands from
us. He wants our trust to be in Him and Him only. He
wants that same reckless sporting spirit of leaping out
in faith, that natural man exhibits without Him. There is
no other way that He is able to use us, to the extent that
He intends, unless we are willing to risk everything.
Doggedly we cling to our old habits and intellects.
We want to measure and weigh all that He asks of us,
and sometimes He will allow us to do that. But by
and large, we know what he wants us to do and there
is no reason not to it except that we do not take Him
at His word. You will find that when you do, it will fit
as solidly as your common sense and you will be
awestruck at the outcome. The alternative is that
we remain too earthly bound to be of any
heavenly good. Amen

Homefires Hearth Tuesday 10.13.09

My trip to Seattle was full. I was in class from 8-4:30, and there

was a significant amount of homework. I came home with a huge

amount of work to accomplish in one week. Over the coming month,

I have a large amount of writing to do to receive my certification as

a Community Work Incentives Coordinator. You all know what that

is, right? <smile> Just a quick explanation, I help people on Social

Security disability or SSI make a plan to go back to work, without

losing their healthcare or benefits for a significant period of time.

While in Seattle, we managed to try some delicious food. Vietnamese

Pho, Indian food, and Ethiopian food served on injera. We were right

downtown so we had a lot of interesting places to eat within walking

distance, and we were just a few blocks from Pikes Market, where

the original Starbucks was born.

My dear Hubby stayed home and kept things going. It was difficult without

him, but the week went by fast.

I was so thankful for the prayer that was covering me, without details,

believe me, they were much appreciated.

My mom is turning 88 on Thursday! If you'd like to send wishes, I'll publish

them in Thursday's Homefires Hearth.

Ambrosia (vegan)

1 cup each of chopped fresh pineapple, apples, and oranges;

sliced strawberries; and organic grapes
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
6 Tbsp. lemon juice
3 Tbsp. sugar
3 Tbsp. orange juice
1/2 cup soft tofu, puréed
2 tsp. grated orange rind
1 tsp. poppy seeds (optional)

In a large bowl, toss the fruit and coconut until well
blended. Refrigerate.
Combine the cornstarch with the lemon juice in a medium
saucepan and stir until well blended. Place the saucepan
over low heat and add the sugar and orange juice. Cook,
stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 5 to

10 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the stove and allow

to cool thoroughly.

Fold the puréed tofu, orange rind, and poppy seeds into the

juice mixture and chill for at least 1 hour.
Pour the dressing over the fruit immediately before serving.
Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Easy Holiday Quick Breads
by Rachel Paxton...taken from the 'Tightwad Tidbits' ezine that I
subscribe to...ENJOY...:)

Quick breads are a quick, easy accompaniment to any holiday meal. For
the best-tasting holiday quick breads, here are some helpful hints:

- Only grease the bottoms of the loaf pans or the sides of the bread
will pull away from the sides of the baking pan.
- Bake in the center of the center rack of the oven.
- When adding liquids to the dry ingredients, stir only until dry
ingredients are moistened. Batter will be lumpy.
- Quick breads can be made ahead and frozen from 1 to 2 months.

CRANBERRY BREAD...

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups flour (I use wheat flour)...
1 egg
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup cranberries, sliced
1 cup sugar
1 cup nuts, chopped (optional)
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon baking soda
Juice and rind of 1 orange
1/2 teaspoon salt

HOW TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add water to orange juice to make 3/4 cup
liquid. Mix all ingredients together and pour into a greased loaf pan.
Bake for 30 minutes.

PUMPKIN BREAD...

INGREDIENTS:
5 cups flour
4 cups sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1 large can pumpkin
2 cups nuts (optional)

HOW TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together vegetable
oil, sugar, and eggs. In another bowl, mix together flour and baking
soda. Add flour and pumpkin alternately to the egg mixture. Add nuts.
Pour into 2 greased loaf pans. Bake for 1 hour.

APPLE BREAD...

INREDIENTS:
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/4 cups oil
2 apples, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 teaspoon baking soda

HOW TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together all
ingredients until well blended. Pour batter into 2 greased loaf pans.
Bake for about 1 hour.

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt
loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It
is then good for nothing but to be thrown out
and trampled underfoot by men" Matt. 5:13

A national radio personality ends his program with "Now,
go make a difference." What does he mean? I once heard
a pastor asked the question, "If our church were to close its
doors today, would anyone miss us?" What did he mean?
Jesus said, "You are the salt of the earth." What did He mean?
Are they all saying the same thing? If so, does anyone really
believe they can make a difference? Are you making a difference?

Let's examine these common phrases for a moment. "Now,
go make a difference." The radio man has just completed a
five-minute broadcast featuring good news: things people did
recently that DID make a difference. Now it seems that he is
telling us that what we do can make a difference as well. The
pastor's comment, "If our church were to close its doors today,
would anyone miss us?" is asking everyone if we are making
a difference in our community. What have we done for the poor,
the emotionally disturbed, the abused spouse, the molested
child, and the widows and orphans? Is our "outreach" reaching
out in actuality, or is it simply another way to make a name for
ourselves? His contention is that if we are "making a difference"
we will be missed.

Finally, take Jesus' statement, "You are the salt of the earth."
Have you ever been on a salt-free diet? Did you enjoy the food?
Were you rejoicing when the doctor told you to add a bit of salt
to your meals? Most of us cannot stand the taste of unsalted
food. My Mom used to cook "salt free." She just didn't use the
stuff in her meal preparation. Instead, salt was a mainstay on
the dinner table. It seemed as though everyone used it - and
used it to extremes. But, as we tried to explain, over and over
a little salt in the cooking replaces tons of salt in the serving.
She never got it.

Jesus says we are "to make a difference" in our world. Just
as salt makes a meal taste better, we should be making our
world a touch better. When we depart this existence and
move on to the true reality, will people cry because we made
a difference in their lives, or will they even notice our passing?
Will our funerals be attended by many who were touched by
our kindness and generosity and love? Or will our services be
attended by a few (not all) family members - only because they
want to know if they are included in our wills?

If we are the salt of the earth, as Jesus says, we will be
missed. We will make a difference. We will have influenced
the world in a positive way. Now, go out and be salt - and
light - and joy - and peace - and ... make a difference. Amen
and Amen.

Start adding a few staple items to your grocery list that you use
for holiday baking and cooking. It will help with the spending
being all at once, plus cut your shopping time down when
you are the busiest.

Also, I use couponmom.com to match my coupons with the

sales in different stores.

to make spinach pie (Spinakopita....sp???) with layers of phyllo dough

and a filling of eggs, cheeses, frozen spinach. I would like to make it,

freeze it, then defrost it and bake it so it is nice and hot when serving.

Does anyone know if this can be frozen ahead, then baked. Any help

would be greatly appreciated. Mary PA.

SPANAKOPITA

2 lbs. fresh spinach (or 3 pkgs. frozen spinach, drained well)
3 lg. eggs
1 tsp. salt
Pepper to taste
1/2 tbsp. nutmeg
1/2 lb. Feta cheese
6 oz. cottage cheese or Ricotta
1/2 lb. butter, melted
1 pkg. phyllo dough (Publix, freezer)
5 scallions, chopped (green part and all)

Wash spinach; discard stems. Dry thoroughly as possible on

absorbent paper; cut in pieces. Saute onion in butter until soft.

Cool. Add spinach, scallions, eggs, cheeses, salt, pepper,

and nutmeg. Mix well. Place 6 or 7 layers of phyllo pastry

sheets in an 11 x 14 x 2 inch pan. Brush each sheet well

with melted butter. Add spinach mixture, then place 7 or 8

layers of phyllo pastry sheets on filling, again buttering each

sheet with melted butter. Cut (squares like) through the top

layer. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour until brown and

crisp. Cut after 5 minutes.

Can freeze uncooked Spanakopita.

Can also be used as an appetizer.

Crockpot Scalloped Potatoes and Ham...

INGREDIENTS:
2-3 cups ham, diced
6-8 potatoes, sliced
2 onions, sliced
1 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 can condensed cream of celery or mushroom soup
Salt and ground black pepper to taste

HOW TO PREPARE:
Put half of the ham, potatoes, and onions in a crock pot. Sprinkle with
salt and pepper, then add the cheese.
Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
Pour (the desired flavor) of soup over the top.

Cover and cook on LOW heat setting for 7 to 9 hours, or until
potatoes are tender.

We are 'Garlic Lovers', so we would probably add Garlic to our recipe...

Three Easy Summer Squash Recipes
by Rachel Paxton (from the Tightwad Tidbits Ezine)

If your garden is over-run with summer squash, try these easy main dish
recipes your family is sure to enjoy. Zucchini can also be substituted
for the summer squash. Enjoy!

Summer Squash Casserole...

INGREDIENTS:
6 c. yellow or zucchini squash, chopped
1/4 c. onion, chopped
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 c. sour cream
1 c. shredded carrot
1 8-oz. pkg. herb stuffing mix
1/2 c. melted shortening

HOW TO PREPARE:
Cook squash and onion about 5 minutes, drain. Combine soup, sour cream,
and carrots, fold in drained squash and onion. Combine stuffing mix and
shortening, spread half of mix into 12x8x2-inch pan. Spoon vegetable mix
over top, cover with rest of stuffing mix. Bake at 350 degrees for 30
minutes. Note: this recipe can be served as a main dish or side dish.

Midwestern Stir-Fry Recipe...

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 c. Miracle Whip Salad Dressing or mayonnaise
2 Tbls. milk
1/2 tsp. mustard
1/2 lb. smoked sausage, cut into 1/4-in. slices, halved
3/4 c. yellow squash slices, halved
1/2 c. green or red pepper strips
1/2 c. green onions, cut into 1-in. pieces Hot cooked rice

HOW TO PREPARE:
Combine salad dressing, milk, and mustard, mixing until well blended;
set aside. Stir-fry sausage in large skillet or wok over high heat until
thoroughly heated. Remove sausage from skillet; drain, reserving 1 tbsp.
fat. Return reserved fat to skillet. Add squash and peppers. Stir-fry 3
minutes. Return sausage to skillet with onions; stir-fry 1 minute.
Remove from heat. Add salad dressing mixture; mix lightly. Serve over
the hot cooked rice.

Summer Squash Pork Bake Recipe...

INGREDIENTS:
1 lb. ground pork
1/2 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 c. fine dry bread crumbs
3 Tbls. Parmesan cheese, grated
6 oz. mozzarella cheese, sliced
1/2 pint sour cream
6 summer squash, each about 5 inches long Salt and pepper

HOW TO PREPARE:
Fry pork until meat loses its pinkness. Drain fat, then stir in garlic
salt, crumbs,
2 Tbls.. Parmesan cheese and sour cream. Set aside. Cut squash in thin
lengthwise slices. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. In a greased
shallow 2-quart baking dish, arrange about half of the squash slices;
spoon pork mixture evenly over top and cover with remaining squash
slices. Bake, covered, 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Uncover, arrange
mozzarella cheese over top and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese.
Bake uncovered 10 minutes or until cheese is golden...ENJOY...:) From

In the United States, most of us are pretty well blessed. One thing
we still have in the United States is freedom of religion. There are
countries that Christianity is illegal, and Christians are imprisoned,
and worse...

When you trust in Jesus, you are trusting that you are FREED from the
law of sin and death... ("the wages of sin are death." Romans 6:23)

What about the faith of believers in countries where Christianity is

illegal, and possessing a Bible can mean the death penalty; does

that mean that their faith is inferior? Are we blessed in the US with

freedom of religion because we have stronger faith than believers in

countries where Christianity is forbidden?

What hope is there for the believers in the countries where they practice
knowing they will be punished? The answer is they are FREE from the
Law of sin and death... they can take comfort that they will spend eternity
with Jesus. Salvation is about having peace here in the midst of any
circumstances, knowing that all circumstances are temporary, but
Heaven is eternity.

When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are, at that moment,
FREE from the wages of sin... which is death. Jesus already paid the price.
Our Jesus had no sin of his own - the wages of sin are death - and he took
ours. Our sin was so putrid God couldn't look at Jesus for a moment - God
is Holy, and He looked away, Jesus took our sin, took it straight to Hell,
and left it there.

You can trust that Jesus loves you, and that he already paid for all your
sin, and remember those that are imprisoned for Jesus' sake all over the

world. Praise the Lord We can all be FREE because of Jesus.

Hot Mexican Salad Recipe

INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 pounds lean ground chuck
1 onion, finely diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 Tbls. ground cumin
1 Tbls. garlic powder
1 (small can diced green chiles)
1 pound cheddar cheese, grated
1 cup tomato sauce
3/4 head Iceburg lettuce shredded
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 -2 Avocados, sliced and chopped
1 can of black olives - chopped
corn chips

HOW TO PREPARE:
Brown ground chuck with onions and peppers. Drain if greasy. Add
seasonings.
Mix in the chilies, cheese, tomato sauce, avacado and sliced olives, and
gently mix. Serve over lettuce and top with the chopped tomatoes and
corn chips.

You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with
gladness, To the end that my glory may sing praise
to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give
thanks to You forever" Psa 30:11-12

I went to a funeral some time ago where there was mourning --
mourning like in Jesus' time. The family was there and they
were crying their eyes out. One family member had to be
removed from the service; her grief was so bad. It was only
later that I learned that the family had been at odds with
each other and that the whole thing was an act!

On the other hand, I went to a funeral of a good friend, a good,
practicing Christian. His funeral was much different. Yes, there
was the ubiquitous tear, but there was something else too.
There was a genuine joy present among the family and friends
who knew our friend was with Jesus! How different the two were.

David says that God had turned his mourning into dancing. How
strange. I can't quite imagine a funeral being turned into a dance
party! Still, I think I know what he meant. Because of the great
deeds the Lord has done for us, we should find it hard to stay
sad for very long -- that is if our eyes are on Him and not ourselves.
We do have that choice. We can look to our own suffering and
sorrow and be miserable. OR we can look to our Lord and His
kindness toward us and be happy.

Come to think of it, we have that choice in all matters. We can
choose to let the circumstances burden us down, or we can
choose to rejoice in God no matter what is happening. Which
do you choose today? I know some of you are suffering. Times
are rough. Things aren't going well. Cheer up, God is still on
the throne and He will not let you suffer if you will turn to Him.
Open your mouth in spite of your sorrow and sing praise to
Him. Don't suffer in silence. Give Him thanks for all He has
done for you. He will set you Free. Hallelujah, Amen.

Homefires Hearth Thursday 9.17.09

For some reason, my next few weeks are packed with three separate

tasks that involve learning: 45 hours of continuing education, and
a trip with to Seattle plus another 6 weeks to get a certificate, and

our Women's Bible Study that includes at least 5 nights of homework.

I just figure it's a ploy by the enemy. I think there is something that

will be pure treasure in the WBS, because it's the only one that

would be okay to slack on. Pray for me that I can find time for the

Bible Study!

Have a wonderful weekend, and don't forget you might be the only

Bible some people will ever read.

foods & have a game that all can play like Catch Phrase or

pictionary. You can have a cookie or recipe exchange (bring

all the ingredients for a favorite recipe.) A "sharing money saving

saving & you go around & share. You could also do a book

exchange - everyone bring a book you have read & are not

planning to keep & exchange - you could play a game to

For our church anniversary we decided to do a cookbook.

While planning, we thought it would be fun to be able to sample

the recipes so we planned a year in advance and met once a

month to sample and share recipes we wanted to put into the

cookbook. You did not have to attend the sampling to have

your recipe in the book but for those that came it was a fun

evening. We had a theme each month--appetizers, breads,

casseroles, cookies, vegetables, cakes, salads,...you get the

idea. Some months brought more people than others but it

got the talk going about the cookbook and maybe helped us

with the sales as well.

Grandma's Sour Cream Cookies...

You really do have to refrigerate them for one hour before cooking. It's
Grandma's secret tip for making them turn out right. Also, you need to
sift your flour first and then measure out your three cups.

INGREDIENTS:
3 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup soft butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla

TOPPING FOR COOKIES:
1/2 cup of sugar
1 tsp. of cinnamon

HOW TO PREPARE:
1. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. (The easiest way
to do this is with your sifter. It doesn't hurt the flour to be
re-sifted.) Set your dry mixture aside.
2. Combine and bean butter, sugar and eggs until they are light and
fluffy.
3. Blend in the sour cream and vanilla until the mixture is nice and
smooth.
4. Add your dry mixture gradually.
5. Refrigerate your cookie dough for one hour.
6. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
7. Drop tablespoon sized cookie dough mixture onto your greased cookie
sheet, making sure they are about two and 1/2 inches apart. (Dough will
puff up and spread out.)
8. Sprinkle your cookies with topping.
9. Bake the cookies 10 to 12 minutes or until the tops of the cookies
are a light golden brown color.
Makes 3 1/2 to 4 dozen cookies.

God's call always rings through the centuries. And it is always the
same to those who knew Him once and turned away. "Return to me. . .
and I will return to you."

The call rings loud and clear to the Church and to America today.
"Return to me."

The Church? Yup. If the apostle Paul were to visit the average church
today, he wouldn't be a happy camper. Indeed, he might even fail to
recognize it as a church as a church at all. many churches are not
much more than a social club led by men who refuse to proclaim
Jesus Christ, and Him crucified, lest they offend one of the wealthy
givers. Yes, God's call rings true, "return to me."

America? I doubt that many of us would deny that one. America has
been used by God to do what no other nation has ever done. We sent
the Word of God around the globe -- and into outer space. We set the
pattern for Christian living for the rest of the world. Our moral standard
was the envy of men and women in every city and village in every country.
Now, our moral standards are the laughing stock of the world. Hollywood
mocks our traditional fundamental beliefs. Politicians cater to groups
diametrically opposed to main stream standards. Businesses are more
concerned about the "bottom line" than their employees or their customers.
"Return to me. . .and I will return to you," says the Lord of Hosts.

I was talking to a young woman at the homeless camp. She had been
hearing the call. I knew it before I ever asked. At one time her life
was lived as a believer. But she had wandered away for whatever
reason. No, she had not wandered away. She had run away.
Her home is Oregon. She ran to Colorado. Her children are with her
mother -- in Oregon. Her heart is in Oregon. But she is in California --
trying to escape from something. She knew she should be in a
Christian fellowship. She knew she would never be happy until
she returned to Jesus -- and her family. Still, she was not ready
to do the about face necessary. God was calling her: "Return to me. . .
and I will return to you," says the Lord of Hosts. I can only pray that
the seeds of restoration have been sown and that someone, somewhere,
sometime will reap the harvest.

Is that call also ringing in your ears? Have you wandered away from
your first love? Now is the time of salvation. Don't let it pass you by.
You may not get another opportunity. Can you hear Him?
"Return to me. . .and I will return to you," says the Lord of Hosts.
Hallelujah, Amen and Amen.

Homefires Hearth Thursday 9.10.09

Finally, a break in the heat. Cooler days are always welcome

when the fire season starts.

We have some church friends that were right on the border of the

Oak Glen Fire. They were under evacuation orders, but their

neighborhood was spared.

California has always had a fire season, but the expansion of

the cities has meant more homes are in harms way.

I hate to mention it, but we are getting into the holiday season.

Now would be a good time to share web sites with good ideas,

ask questions from our very talented readers, and share some

frugal tips, too.

INGREDIENTS:
4 c. sliced apples
1/2 c. oatmeal
1/3 c. soft margarine or butter
2/3 c. brown sugar
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. flour
3/4 tsp. nutmeg

HOW TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place sliced apples in greased pan. Blend
remaining ingredients until mix is crumbly. Spread over apples. Bake
30-35 min. (or until apples are tender) and topping is golden brown.
Serve warm with cream, ice cream, or cool whip. Rhubarb, peaches,
huckleberries, etc., may be used instead of apples.

Applemallow Bake Recipe...

INGREDIENTS:
6 c. (6 medium) peeled and thinly sliced apples 3 c. miniature
marshmallows
1/4 c. cinnamon candies

HOW TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In ungreased 9x5 inch loaf pan or 1 qt.
baking dish, mix apples, cinnamon candies, and 2 c. marshmallows. Top
with remaining 1 c. marshmallows. Bake, uncovered, for 45-50 min. until
apples are tender. Serve hot.

Apple Cake Recipe...

INGREDIENTS:
4 c. fresh apples (diced)
1/2 c. vegetable oil
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. sugar
2 well-beaten eggs
2 tsp. baking soda

HOW TO PREPARE:
Mix apples and sugar thoroughly. Add vegetable oil, nuts, eggs and
vanilla. Mix and add flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Bake in
greased 9x13 pan for 1 hr. or until shrinks from edges of pan. Serve
plain, iced, or with cool whip.

or deflate, inspire, or create despair. Many a successful
executive can remember the time their father failed to give
affirmation to them as a child. The result was either over
achievement to prove their worth, or under achievement to
prove he was right.

Many a wife has lost her ability to love because of a critical
husband. Many a husband has left a marriage because of
words of disrespect and ungratefulness. Stories abound to
the power of words. There are just as many stories of those
who have encouraged, challenged and comforted with words
that made a difference in their life.

Jesus knew the power of words. He used parables to convey
his principles of the Kingdom of God. He used words of forgive-
ness and mercy. He used words to challenge. He used words
to inspire His disciples to miraculous faith.

Do your words give life? Do they inspire and challenge others
to greatness? Who does God want you to encourage through
your words today? Affirm someone close to you today. Amen
